Assists the Administrator in the operation of a school transportation program. Determining efficient routing technique and time schedules; assists in the evaluation of staff; assists in all personnel matters; initiates follow-up procedures to update bus routes throughout the year; determines eligibility of students for transportation; interviews prospective drivers and mechanics and making recommendations for hiring; assists in driver training, orientation and evaluation programs; Ensures compliance with government mandates pertaining to school bus operators including contract carriers; provides transportation services for field trips, interscholastic athletics and other special requests; assists in overseeing the safety programs and their formulation as well as employee driving safety records; assists with transportation safety and accident investigation; assists in the supervision and directs a comprehensive program of school vehicle maintenance and repair; maintains necessary records involving payroll, personnel, material costs, equipment and parts inventory, etc. Responsible for the preparation of reports on all aspects of school transportation; Requisitions supplies and equipment; Prepares specifications for equipment and supplies, reviews bids and recommends appropriate purchases; Acts as liaisons with the public as well as outside agencies; Responsible for timely and courteous replies to inquiries and complaints from parents and school administrators; Reviews state aid forms and contractor billing against mileage and maintenance records; May drive a school bus as needed.
Ideal candidate will have knowledge or background in automotive repair and management experience.
Must currently hold a permanent position in the title to be eligible for transfer consideration.
Applicants who do not hold permanent status in the position must meet the civil service requirements to take the next exam given. Upon a certified list being established, the eligible candidate must be able to be appointed in accordance with Civil Service rules and regulations.
Good knowledge of standard transportation methods and programs as related to pupil transportation including:
Good knowledge of the principles and practices used in the purchasing and requisitioning of school transportation vehicles; tires, gasoline, oil and sundry automotive parts. Good knowledge of the methods and terminology used in the repair of school buses. Ability to produce and maintain comprehensive reports and records. Ability to supervise in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale. Ability to maintain cooperative working relationships with the public, school administrators and the State Education Department. Ability to gather, compile and analyze data pertinent to a school transportation program. Ability to give oral and written reports.
